Daeng Soetigna and Angklung Modernization

There are two important figure in history and development of modern angklung in West Java. They are Daeng Soetigna and Udjo Ngalagena. Daeng developed his creation with gamut basic do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-si-do from European, eventhough Udjo played with gamut basic da-mi-na-ti-la-da from Sundanese. They noted in history of music, exactly bamboo music. They make famous angklung to abroad. But, Daeng Soetigna has make cultural mix in angklung. The name of Daeng’s angklung is Padaeng. In form Daeng’s angklung like traditional, but the sound like modern. Impossible, there is Daeng’s angklung in traditional ceremony, like in Baduy inland or traditional ceremony in Priangan. Because formerly angklung was played in harvest ceremony, angklung are played by beneath people. Not like Kecapi in Cianjuran music which played by blue-blood. Deang always enthuastic created his imagine to angklung and inform to mass public. With Deang’s angklung materpieces song like Beethoven’s Shymphony can be played beautifully. His ambition to make famous angklung well done, not in west java, Indonesia but abroad. Now, its problems are how proud Sundanese to angklung?so, let’s play, survive, and develop to be everlasting.
